Holiday 101 Hacks

As pleasurable as travelling is – discovering new places and cultures - it can also be stressful, tiring and can pose any number of minor health threats, against which it is good to be prepared before setting off.

Taking precautions before you go by putting together a compact first aid kit including self-medication for tummy bugs and/or food poisoning, heat related illnesses (heatstroke, sunburn etc), insect and water borne diseases and even a broad-spectrum antibiotic is a good place to begin.

But since prevention is better than cure… don’t forget to pack and use your insect repellent and sunblock and when trying out the culinary delights in other countries, watch out for street vendors whose standards of hygiene may not be what you are used to. Unwashed/unpeeled fruit and vegetables and local tap water (including ice cubes), which may be safe to drink, but which sensitive tummies may not be used to, should be avoided if at all possible.

Be sure to try and balance rest with activity. If you are on a beach holiday, take long walks but if yours is an action-packed vacation, take some time to relax by the pool!

When your sleep patterns due to different time zones are already disrupted, it is easy to become so exhausted you may be prone to illness during or after your holiday, when your intention was to relax. Site seeing on holiday should preferably not include the local hospital!
