Managing the Risk
Posted in Broker In Your Pocket on Feb 07, 2023
In this issue of Broker in your Pocket, Nadia Nel conveys the importance of risk cover by relaying her own experience around receiving a life-altering diagnosis…
I tell my clients on the daily “these things happen” and then; it happened to me. Not to someone I know, or a friend, or a family member, but to me.
“I was diagnosed with the BIG C - cancer”
In our industry, we have a model we use based on statistics; it’s called the 3-4-5:
3 Not eating healthy, smoking, and not exercising.
4 These lifestyle choices cause 4 major diseases: heart attacks, cancer, diabetes, and strokes
5 Which in turn contribute to 50% deaths worldwide
Some diseases are hereditary, but lifestyle choices contribute to most of the above-mentioned diseases.
In my case, none of the above applied. I have no family history of cancer and believe me when I say, I don’t like sunbathing. I was diagnosed with Malignant Melanoma Stage 1 – Skin Cancer.
The point is, there’s no accurate gauge to be 100% sure if you are at risk or not. I think Covid-19 showed us all how vulnerable we really are. It appears we have forgotten already.
We are ALL at risk.
Medical technology has become so advanced that a cancer diagnosis can take place sooner, and treatments have become more successful at saving lives, with survival rates increasing exponentially. But this is not for free.
I stand very proud to be a client, and to represent a brand, which outperformed even my expectations. I’ve always been passionate about risk cover but now have the personal experience to substantiate my words with my own testimony.
Receiving a pay-out to get treatment can save your life. In my case, it gave me the time to heal and not worry about generating an income.
None of this would have meaning without the people around you. My family and friends were there to support me and the 1.618 Group is a part of my family and friends. I would like to give a special shout out to our fearless leaders Candice and Tyrone. I don’t think people can understand what a huge difference support, and love, makes during an uncertain and very scary time. It was the silver lining every day, it warmed my heart every time I received a call or message of support, it gave me the smile I needed to face the day.
I am very fortunate that this was caught in time and remedied. But my real fortune came in knowing that I was covered, it also continues with knowing I belong and that that I have a whole army in my corner.
